Life intervenes, as it so often does. We are sending out a brief newsletter for September. But don’t worry, we’ll be back in October for our quarterly 700-word short stories. Topic? Here’s a teaser. The 1920s. Prohibition. Illegal hooch. Got your attention now?
In the meantime, welcome to those of you who recently signed up for the newsletter. We’re taking this opportunity to tell you about ourselves.
Plus, you can check out past editions of the newsletter, including our earlier 700-word mysteries, at our newsletter archive.
D. Z. Church
For those of you who are new to our mailing list, thank you for joining the book giveaway featuring Dead Legend, the first book in my Cooper Quartet.
A bit about me and my writing: D.Z. Church served in the U.S. Navy, was a Clio-winning Creative Director, and won millions and millions of dollars in contracts for a Fortune Five-hundred company. More importantly, she started writing at eight, and like Forrest Gump running, never stopped. She is happiest writing her thrillers, Cooper Vietnam Era Quartet, a saga of one family’s journey through the tumult of the Vietnam Era. Saving Calypso, Booth Island and Perfidia, all offering a soupçon of romance amongst the thrills and suspense. And her cozy series, the Wanee Mysteries set in a small town on the Illinois prairie in the 1870s. It features Cora Countryman, a young woman intent on remaining single and leading a life of mystery and adventure. The first book in the series is Unbecoming a Lady.

I hope you’ll find our newsletter interesting and filled with fun facts about the writing process and our upcoming releases and featured specials.
Janet Dawson
Our newsletters cover all sorts of subjects—the writing process, setting, characters and so forth. And each quarter, we write 700-word mysteries. Yes, it’s a challenge to fit a plot into such a small format. That’s why we have fun with it.
Here’s a little bit about me: Janet Dawson’s life of crime began with her long-running series featuring Oakland PI Jeri Howard, who has sleuthed her way through fourteen books. Jeri’s latest case is The Things We Keep. Janet stepped back in time to the 1950s and climbed aboard the historic train known as the California Zephyr, where her inquisitive Zephyrette Jill McLeod rides the rails, assisting passengers and solving crimes. Jill’s latest adventure is Death Above the Line. Janet also writes about geriatric care manager Kay Dexter, who advocates for her elderly clients in The Sacrificial Daughter. Other books include suspense novel What You Wish For as well as a novella, But Not Forgotten. Janet has written numerous short stories, including Macavity winner “Voice Mail” and Shamus nominee “Slayer Statute.” She calls California home and has ties to Colorado. She worked as a reporter and later, as a Navy journalist. She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area and writes full time. She enjoys gardening, the theatre, music and museums. She also denies being a crazy cat lady.
